Recent Choir Accomplishments

- 2000 -

Together with the Kuumba Singers and the choirs of Charles Street A.M.E. Church in Roxbury, the University Choir sang in a joint service in celebration of Black History Month in The Memorial Church.

- 2001 -

The University Choir performed Haydn’s Creation in Sanders Theatre with the Mozart Society Orchestra.

The University Choir embarked on a tour of Europe.
In England they performed at New College, Oxford; St. John’s College, Cambridge; and Emmanuel College, Cambridge. In addition, concerts were also given at Southwark Cathedral, London and Temple Church, London where the critically acclaimed CD of Amy Beach and Randall Thompson’s choral music was recorded. In France The University Choir sang at Notre Dame, Paris and in Finland at Turku Cathedral and in Tempelliaukio.

The Choral Fellows program was instituted.

The Choral Fellows sing the national anthem at the Red Sox’s opening day game at Fenway Park.

In October, The Memorial Church celebrates the acquisition of a Peter Fisk harpsichord with a concert featuring the Harvard Baroque Chamber Orchestra.

- 2002 -

Under the direction of Christopher Hogwood, the choir sings the Boston premiere of C.P.E. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion.

The University Choir participates in a joint concert with The Kuumba Singers, and The Harvard Pops Orchestra entitled Spirit Songs.

The Choir celebrates the music of Handel in a November concert, launching the weekend festivities to celebrate the Seventieth Anniversary of The Memorial Church.

- 2003 -

The Harvard University Choir sings together with The Kuumba Singers and The Boys Choir of Harlem, under the direction of Dr. Walter J. Turnbull.

The Choral Fellows, together with The Boston Camerata, present a concert entitled O triumphale diamante! Music for Ferrara 1400–1500.

Dr. Murray Forbes Somerville conducts his farewell event, The Dickinson Concert: The Passion According to St. John.

The Choral Fellows hosted Collegium Regale, the Choral Scholars of King’s College, Cambridge, England.

The University Choir and the Baroque Chamber Orchestra present Handel’s Solomon at The Dickinson Concert.

Edward Elwyn Jones is appointed the seventh Gund University Organist and Choirmaster after serving as the Acting University Organist and Choirmaster during the 2003–2004 academic year.

Compline
First Thursday of each month in Term
10:00 pm
Appleton Chapel in The Memorial Church

The ancient service of Compline is held one Thursday a month, at 10:00 p.m. during Term. Based upon the traditional evening liturgy of scripture, music, prayer, and silence, this twenty-minute service is sung in the candlelit space of Appleton Chapel by members of the University Choir. All are welcome.
