2007–2008 UChoir EventsMost choir events are open to the community to attend free of charge. For popular seasonal and special events, seating may be limited so be sure to come early! MUSIC IN WORSHIPSunday Service Sundays, 11:00 a.m. The Sunday Choir performs first-class choral repertoire for the Sunday services. Each service consists to two major anthems as well as hymns, a choral amen, and other service music as the weekly liturgy requires.
Morning Prayers Monday through Saturday, 8:45 a.m. Monday through Friday, the Choral Fellows perform a variety of music from Anglican chant to plainsong to renaissance motets to twentieth-century anthems each morning. Traditionally, music for Saturday morning prayers is provided by soloists or smaller groups formed from within the ensemble.
Compline First Thursday of each month in term, 10:00 p.m. The ancient service of Compline is held one Thursday a month, at 10:00 p.m. during Term. Based upon the traditional evening liturgy of scripture, music, prayer, and silence, this twenty-minute service is sung in the candlelit space of Appleton Chapel by members of the University Choir. Service of Dedication and Celebration of the new Sunday, October 21, 5:00 p.m. A special service of dedication and celebration will mark the unveiling and launch of the new fourth edition of The Harvard University Hymn Book. Marking the end of a nearly ten-year project of revision and re-creation, this service will include the congregational singing of hymns from the book, led by the Harvard University Choir. Addresses from guest speakers will also be featured, including Carl P. Daw, Jr., Executive Director of The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada. This will be the first opportunity to see the new edition of the hymnal; copies will also be available for sale at this gala event.
The 98th Annual Sunday, December 16, 5:00 p.m. The services feature seasonal music performed by the Harvard University Choir, including a new commission from Emma Lou Diemer. Members of the Harvard University community are invited to attend the service on Sunday, while the general public is encouraged to attend the Monday service. Doors open one hour before the services. Admission is free; an offering for charity is collected.
